GILROY, California — On Sunday, March 15, 2015, thirty-five Christians and Muslims united to serve 120 meals to the hungry and homeless of Gilroy at St. Joseph’s Family Center. Pastor Albright and Aziz Baameur were in rare form as they oriented volunteers and lightened the mood with enthusiasm and comedy. Volunteers united in buddy groups to prepare a halal meal together. Mohammed Hussain grilled his world famous chicken with Norm Kincl and Najeed. After meal service, volunteers dined together and enjoyed further conversation. Marking their fourth year of collaboration together, many volunteers were already well acquainted and the camaraderie was palpable. Guests asked what church the volunteers were from. When told it was a joint effort between Lincoln Glen Church and South Valley Islamic Community, they smiled wide! In the words of one volunteer, people could "taste the love" that all put into the meal. The event closed with a wonderful prayer of blessing from Salah Hamed, to which all said a hearty, “Amen!” Volunteers enjoyed their time together so thoroughly, several insisted that all meet again soon just to enjoy each other’s company without all the demands of meal service. Thanks be to God, الحمد لله plans for such a reunion are under way already!
