GILROY, California — On Sunday, May 4, 2014, thirty-three Christians and Muslims united to serve 120 meals to the hungry and homeless at St. Joseph’s Family Shelter. Several children also showed up to help and liven up the atmosphere with fun. Volunteers united in buddy groups to get better acquainted before collaborating to prepare a halal barbecued chicken meal. After meal service, volunteers dined together and enjoyed further conversation, building bridges of peace and understanding between faith communities. The event took place at a smaller venue than past service events at St. Joseph’s, creating a more intimate atmosphere for volunteers to get to know each other. A St. Joseph’s staff person thought fewer guests than usual would come due to competition with Cinco de Mayo barbecues throughout the area, but the irresistible fragrance coming from the BBQ grills of Mohammed Idris Husain and Norm Kincl packed out the dining hall far beyond expectations. St. Joseph’s staff also commented that it was a luxury for guests to enjoy barbecued chicken and fresh produce since they cannot normally afford to provide meat or fresh fruit. The event was sponsored by South Valley Islamic Community and Lincoln Glen Church, and led by Brother Aziz Baameur and Pastor Larry Albright. Brother Aziz closed the event with a prayer of thanksgiving, to which all added a hearty, “Amen.”
