Feeding homeless families at Family Supportive Housing
(formerly San Jose Family Shelter).
Children of Muslim and Christian volunteers gathered at the AAi office on April 29 to decorate cupcakes for children at the family shelter. Afterwards, several proceeded to Lincoln Glen Church to prepare halal
chicken in a tasty marinade.
The following day, volunteers from several churches and mosques gathered to prepare and serve a yummy BBQ chicken dinner. Volunteers worked together in buddy groups, getting to know each other in a context of compassion. While some volunteers began preparing dinner, others helped children create dental tote bags in a pre-meal craft. Afterwards Dr. Reza Hakimpour delivered a presentation on dental hygiene, educating children and parents about good dental habits and preventative dental care. After the presentation, dinner was served. Volunteers waited on tables, refilled drinks, then surprised shelter residents with two scrumptious desserts. In addition to fancy gourmet cupcakes, members of Pacifica Institute, Silicon Valley Branch also served a delicious Turkish dessert.
After all shelter residents finished eating, volunteers dined together in buddy groups. New friendships were made. Bridges of understanding were built.
